Key Findings:
Hand Luggage: All five budget airlines offer similar hand baggage space. Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Flybe and Jet2 all permit a 10kg hand luggage bag, varying just slightly in size, alongside a smaller item such as a handbag or a laptop. Easy Jet, however, only permits one single piece of hand luggage.
Checked Baggage: Checked baggage fees for all the main budget airlines varies greatly, with Ryanair charging £35 for a 20kg item and Jet2 charging £10 for a 20kg bag.
Excess Baggage Fees: Extra weight on a Flybe flight will cost you a hefty £15 per kg. With Aer Lingus and Jet2, excess baggage is charged at £12 per kg and with Ryanair and Easy Jet, you pay £10 per kg. Travelling with an overweight bag can add considerable extra costs to your overall journey.
Tips For Lowering Baggage Costs
1. Always book online. Booking your luggage at the airport check in desk can cost up to twice as much as online.
2. Don’t go overweight. Excess baggage charges can really add up, so make sure your luggage is not overweight. If you’re not sure how heavy your suitcase is, you can buy an inexpensive set up luggage scales from Amazon or in many local Pound Stores.
